Trek Highlights

From a quiet neighborhood by a country club, squeeze between a fence and gate to enter the Beaudry North Motorway. This initial stretch follows the dry bed of Deer Creek. After a couple turns, you will arrive at the true start of the loop. Take the right fork to go counterclockwise on Beaudry North Motorway.

Just below Tongva Peak

The loop is essentially a wide fire road on the ridgeline connecting Tongva Peak with Mount Thom. It’s a steady climb up the western slopes with a few bends at the drainages. Just before reaching the top of the ridgeline, you will make a big sharp turn to the left onto Verdugo Motorway. About 2.8 miles from the trailhead, you will reach Tongva Peak at 2,656 feet. At the top of Tongva Peak, KROQ has a number of radio antenna towers. The Tongva, or Gabrielino, are an indigenous people who lived in the Los Angeles Basin.

After that, the path is all downhill from here. At 3.5 miles from the trailhead, Mount Thom is 2,440 feet with its own antenna farm. Follow the left fork and descend the Beaudry South Motorway. This is the straightest and steepest section of the route, so try not to run too fast. After a mile and a half, the trail has a couple little switchbacks before returning to the trailhead.
